DENGKIL: While the old argument of nature or nurture continues among scholars and academicians, Disney Channel hopes to combine the two to achieve two important objectives.

Firstly, it wants to keep the country green and save the environment through its "Jom Hijaukan Malaysia" project, which involved the planting of 1,500 trees of various species in the Paya Indah Wetlands recently.

Secondly, it hopes to nurture awareness of the need to safeguard nature in 300 schoolchildren aged between 9 to 14 years, from all over the country, who had helped to plant the trees.

Disney Channel Southeast Asia vice-president and managing director Laura E. Wendt said it was important to educate the young about the need to protect the environment.

"Today we planted shade trees like mango, white gum, chempedak and more, thanks to the children and the Malaysian celebrities who lent their voices for the Bahasa Malaysia premier of High School Musical 3: Senior Years," she said.

The celebrities she was referring were Dafi, Mila, Gabriella, Marsha, Nana and Fauziah Nawi.

Dafi said he was excited to see such a large turn out at the tree-planting event.

"This is a good way for the younger generation to start appreciating the importance of protecting nature and that it is a part of their responsibilities," said Dafi who is currently busy with his new single and musical drama, which are both produced by the label Kru Records.

Akademi Fantasi 5 winner Mila was also happy to lend a hand to help the environment.

"Even though it's a small gesture, it makes so much difference for the future," said Mila who appeared in the latest Astro Ria soap drama Kau Dan Aku.

Dafi and Mila performed and sang Right Here Right Now, one of the hit numbers from the HSM3 soundtracks.

XFM Radio deejay Nana said getting involved in projects like this was a way for them to give back to society.

She said the flamboyant character Sharpay, which she gives voice to in the movie, was an ambitious character, just like her.

"Although Sharpay is a teenage diva, she does have a soft side. As for the diva in me, that's just not who I am," laughed Nana, looking ravishing with her new Rihanna-like hairstyle.

Lavanya Patrick, 13, of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kajang Utama, said it was time everyone pitched in to save the environment as it had been affected by global warming.

"We have to play our role and keep the environment green, "said Lavanya.

Asfariena Adam, 12, of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Tampoi, said she had enjoyed the day with her two favourite celebrities, Dafi and Mila.

The Bahasa Malaysia version of High School Musical 3: Senior Years premiered on Astro Disney Channel 615 on Dec 5.
